SMiShing Fraud is Active

SMiShing Fraud is Active 7/6/2018

Looks like the robo phishers are at it again. Our Customer Care Center is reporting quite a number of calls from customers about the smishing text message pictured. SMiShing is a security attack in which the user is tricked into downloading a Trojan horse, virus or other malware onto his/her cellular phone or mobile device. SMiShing is short for SMS phishing. Another goal of SMiShing is to get private information from a person by getting them to text back or call a number.

Please keep in mind the following tips when you receive suspicious text messages:

  • DO NOT CALL THE PHONE NUMBER LISTED IN THE TEXT MESSAGE. The person who answers may claim to be from Centennial Bank but they are not employees of the bank.

  • Don't reply to text messages from people you don't know. Especially those including links for which you don't know the destination.
  • If you get a text message with a suspicious link from a friend consider calling them to verify they sent the text message.
  • Make sure any apps you install come from the official app store of your device.
  • Using anti-malware software on your phone is also recommended.
